What is CPTED?
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED, pronounced "sep-ted") is a proactive, multidisciplinary approach to reducing criminal behaviour by designing physical environments that promote safety and deter crime.
As a Level 1 CPTED-certified consultant, Nelson assesses residential and commercial properties using four core principles:
Natural Surveillance — maximizing visibility so that spaces feel monitored, through proper lighting, low landscaping, and open sightlines.
Natural Access Control — limiting access to potential targets using design elements such as fencing, walkways, and security gates.
Territorial Reinforcement — defining property boundaries to foster a sense of ownership and discourage intruders through fencing, signage, and landscaping.
Maintenance & Management — ensuring spaces remain well-maintained to signal that a property is actively monitored and cared for.
Whether you own a home, a business, or manage a commercial property, a CPTED assessment provides actionable recommendations to improve safety and reduce opportunities for crime.
"A gate with no fencing on either side — a common example of what a CPTED assessment identifies."
